No Dial Tone Troubleshooting Guide
This guide helps you troubleshoot common reasons your home phone may not have a dial tone.
Step 1
Make Sure All Phones Are Hung Up
Check that all handsets are properly placed on their base or hook.
For cordless phones, press the End Call button to ensure no active call is still open.

Check Power Connections
Your phone needs power to function properly.
For corded phones:
- Check that the power cable is firmly plugged into the phone and wall outlet.

If using a power strip:
- Make sure it hasn’t been tripped. Locate the circuit breaker switch or button and press it to reset.

Check Phone Line Connections
There should be a phone cable connected to your device.

Try a Power Cycle
Restart your phone equipment:
- Unplug the phone and base from power.
- Wait about 60 seconds.
- Plug everything back in and test for dial tone.
